Silica Sand – Industrial Grade

Mineral Description

Silica Sand is a high-purity industrial mineral composed mainly of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Known for its hardness, thermal resistance and excellent granulometric uniformity, silica sand is one of the most important raw materials used across construction, glassmaking, filtration and foundry industries.

Industrial Uses and Applications

  • Glass industry: essential raw material for flat glass, tempered glass, fiberglass and containers.
  • Foundry: used as molding sand for metal casting due to its thermal stability.
  • Construction: used in mortars, specialty cements, concrete, flooring and prefabricated materials.
  • Water filtration: washed silica sand for desalination plants, industrial filtration and swimming pools.
  • Paints and coatings: used as filler and anti-slip additive.
  • Oil & Gas: frac sand used in hydraulic fracturing operations.
  • Sports and landscaping: sand for artificial turf, golf courses and sports fields.

Extraction and Processing

Silica sand is extracted from quarries or river deposits, then washed to remove impurities, dried and graded by mesh size. Purity levels typically range from 95% to 99% SiO₂ depending on the source and application.

Main producing regions include Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, India, Spain and South Africa.
