Coal – Energy & Industrial Grade

Mineral Description

Coal is one of the most important industrial and energy minerals worldwide, valued for its high carbon content and strong calorific properties. Depending on its type—anthracite, bituminous, sub-bituminous or lignite—coal plays a critical role in energy production, metallurgy, cement manufacturing and high-temperature industrial processes.

Industrial Uses and Applications

  • Power generation: main fuel for thermal power plants and steam boilers.
  • Metallurgy: used in the production of metallurgical coke for steelmaking.
  • Cement industry: heat source for clinker kilns.
  • Chemical industry: raw material for ammonia, synthesis gas and carbon-based chemicals.
  • Ceramics and brick factories: used as a thermal fuel for high-temperature kilns.

Extraction and Processing

Coal is extracted from underground or open-pit mines. After extraction, it undergoes crushing, washing, grading and drying. Quality is determined by calorific value (GCV), ash content, moisture, sulfur and volatile matter.

Major producing countries include Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, Pakistan, India, China and Colombia.
