Lead Ore – Galena (PbS) Industrial Grade

Mineral Description

Lead Ore, primarily in the form of Galena (Lead Sulfide – PbS), is the world’s most important source of refined lead. Galena is a heavy, metallic-grey mineral with a high lead content and cubic crystalline structure, making it essential for multiple industrial sectors including batteries, metallurgy, chemicals and radiation protection.

Industrial Uses and Applications

  • Battery manufacturing: main raw material for lead-acid batteries used in vehicles and power systems.
  • Metallurgical industry: production of refined lead, alloys and ingots.
  • Chemical industry: manufacturing of lead oxides, pigments and other compounds.
  • Radiation shielding: production of lead sheets and components for medical and nuclear protection.
  • Electronics & soldering: specialized lead-based alloys for industrial applications.
  • Defense: used in ammunition and specialized ballistic materials.

Grades and Specifications

Lead ore is commonly available in the following grades:

  • 40%+ Pb
  • 50%+ Pb
  • 60%+ Pb
  • Lead Concentrate: 70%–75% Pb

Extraction and Processing

Lead ore is extracted from underground and open-pit mines. The material undergoes crushing, grinding, flotation separation, drying and chemical analysis to determine Pb, PbS, Ag, Zn and moisture content.

Major producing regions include Pakistan, Peru, Mexico, Morocco, China, Serbia and Turkey.
